‘Our bank is strong because our history is strong’

Kevin C. Merchant
President and CEO
These days, many people are rediscovering the value of taking a conservative approach with their money. At Jewett City Savings Bank, we’ve been doing just that since 1873.

Through changing times, our commitment to careful financial management, high quality lending standards and prudent investment practices has never wavered. Our focus has always been to provide our customers with community banking solutions that offer superior convenience, value and security.

But you don’t have to take our word for it. For the 65th consecutive quarter, Jewett City Savings Bank has earned a 5-Star Superior rating for financial strength from BauerFinancial, Inc. This puts Jewett City Savings in an elite group of banks considered “Exceptional Performance Banks” by the rating firm.

In these uncertain times, now may be the time to come home to a community bank with a history of financial strength. To learn more, stop by any office of Jewett City Savings Bank today.

FDIC questions? New website has all of your answers!
If you have any questions about your FDIC deposit insurance here at Jewett City Savings Bank, you can ask us – or – you can ask “EDIE”!

EDIE stands for Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator, and it’s a great new tool on the FDIC website that lets you enter your own information and determine exactly how much FDIC insurance coverage you have, depending on a combination of your different account ownerships (go to www.myfdicinsurance.gov).

On October 3, 2008, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) deposit insurance temporarily increased from $100,000 to $250,000 per depositor through December 31, 2009. If you have a number of accounts, you may be surprised to learn that your coverage may extend way beyond the basic $250,000. Find out how by viewing the four depositor stories on the website. Each shows a different combination of bank accounts and ownership to help you see the various ways in which FDIC coverage can be calculated.

A few minutes with EDIE, or with a customer service representative at Jewett City Savings Bank, can give you endless peace of mind.

Make sure crime doesn’t pay! Beware of “vishing” attacks
In September, we had reports of fraudulent telephone calls appearing to be from Jewett City Savings Bank. The caller requested verification of ATM or debit card information.

These calls were NOT from the Bank. They were made by criminals attempting to steal your personal information, via one version of a new cyber crime called “vishing,” short for “voice phishing.”

Jewett City Savings Bank would never call and ask for your personal information over the phone, nor would we request such information by e-mail.

If you receive such a phone call, or suspect that your personal information may have been compromised, please contact the Bank immediately at 376-4444.

You can also file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a partnership between the FBI, the National White Collar Crime Center, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance. The IC3 gives the victims of cyber crime a convenient and easy-to-use reporting mechanism that alerts authorities of suspected criminal or civil violations. You’ll find the Center at www.ic3.gov.

WHAT IS VISHING?Vishing has many faces. It could be the telephone scam described here, or it can also start with an e-mail.

Here’s how it works. You receive an e-mail that requests that you contact a particular financial institution (bank, etc.) by phone in order to resolve an issue or re-secure personal data. The e-mail gives you the number to call. You dial the number provided, and you’re prompted (by a real person or a recording) to provide personal information during the call. The number you dialed, of course, rings right into the hands of a cyber criminal – whom you assume to be an employee of the institution you called. Wrong! And there goes all your information, and your identity.

How can you avoid vishing tactics like these? The best defense is common sense. If your bank or another institution with which you are affiliated contacts you requesting personal data, hang up the phone or close the e-mail immediately. Call the institution using only the number provided on the back of your bank card or on other official bank documents.

And remember, Jewett City Savings Bank will never call and ask for your personal information over the phone, nor would we request such information by e-mail.

According to the FBI, vishing attacks are on the rise. Complaints are being received at an alarming rate. Please heed the warnings so you won’t be the next victim. Please call us at (860) 376-4444 with any questions you may have.

Fraudsters hope to fool people who know not to click a link in an unsolicited email that asks for personal information. Making a call might seem like the safe thing to do if you don’t realize that number goes to a crook.

Look for us soon in Preston!
Jewett City Savings Bank will open a new full-service branch office at 353 Route 165 in Preston later this month. The new Fleming’s Center office will feature a drive-up window and 24-hour drive-up ATM for customer convenience. It will be our fifth full-service office, and the first banking office in the town of Preston.

The branch is expected to open in November, according to Kevin C. Merchant, president and CEO. “We are pleased to be able to offer our trademark brand of community banking to the residents and businesses of Preston,” said Merchant. “Opening in a new community is always exciting for us, and we are especially pleased to add Preston to our branch network.”

Heading up the Preston team as branch manager will be Mary Papenfoth, who is currently the assistant manager at our Main Office in Jewett City. Mary joined the bank in October of 1994 and has been the assistant manager at the Main Office for the last 12 years.
