Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation Now Accepting 2010 Grant Applications

The Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation is now accepting 2010 grant applications from local 501(c)(3), 170(c)(1) organizations, and other qualified non-profits whose work benefits the population of those communities where Jewett City Savings Bank has a major presence.

Guidelines and grant applications are available online here and at all offices of Jewett City Savings Bank. Completed applications must be received no later than August 31, 2010. Funding for approved projects will be made by December 31, 2010.

Financial support will be offered for existing program support, general support, special projects, and/or start-up endeavors covering a variety of issues impacting the community. The Foundation does not provide funding for individuals, sports, individual schools or religious groups.

The maximum grant amount is $5,000, determined by demonstrated needs and existing resources.

In 2009, Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation grant funding exceeded $48,000. A total of 37 area non-profit civic and charitable groups benefited, including local fire companies, libraries, and a number of programs advancing education, health and youth initiatives.

Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation gifts benefit bowlers, birders and builders

Three recent grants from the Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation, totaling $2,550, will benefit a trio of initiatives sponsored by non-profit organizations in Norwich, Pomfret, and Putnam.

The Foundation’s $1,000 award to Special Olympics Connecticut in Norwich will support 125 athletes from Windham County who are expected to take part in the 2010 Connecticut Eastern Region Bowling Qualifier in Brooklyn.

The Connecticut Audubon Society Center at Pomfret will use its $900 grant from the Foundation to purchase field sampling equipment and digital cameras as part of its environmental education programs.

In Putnam, Habitat for Humanity of Northeast Connecticut’s $650 Foundation grant will be used for the purchase of tools for use by volunteers, and also for computer software upgrades.

“These programs all contribute to building a stronger community,” said Kevin C. Merchant, president of the Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation. “That has always been a goal of the Bank, and of the Foundation.”

The three awards were among those announced at a recent reception in Griswold, where representatives from 18 local non-profit civic and charitable organizations were present to receive a combined total of $25,350 in grants from the Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation during the most recent funding period.

Portable defibrillator for Windham Hospital from Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation

Windham Hospital will provide an added element of safety for employees and visitors in the future, thanks to a recent award of $1,500 to the Windham Hospital Foundation from the Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation.

According to Mona Friedland, executive director of the Windham Hospital Foundation, a defibrillator will be purchased for the offsite Windham Mammography Center in Mansfield.

Kevin C. Merchant, president of the Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation, explained that the award to Windham Hospital reinforces the Bank’s recent emphasis on making automated external defibrillators generally available for use by the community in emergency situations.

Over the past several months, Jewett City Savings Bank has funded the purchase of four portable defibrillators, most recently for the activities of the Plainfield Youth Football Association and the Plainfield Youth Panthers. Earlier donations were made to the Moosup Little League, the Plainfield Public School system for use at the Plainfield Early Childhood Center, and the Griswold Public Schools.

“Jewett City Savings Bank is proud to be a leader in a campaign to make portable defibrillators available throughout our communities, to keep all our neighbors safe,” said Merchant.

Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation grants provide support for families in need

Recent grants from the Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation to organizations in Willimantic and Norwich will help provide for the well-being of local individuals and families in need, according to a statement by Kevin C. Merchant, president and CEO of Jewett City Savings Bank.

The Foundation awarded a $1,000 grant to United Community and Family Services, Inc. of Norwich, to help offset the costs of primary care, dental, in-school dental, and outpatient behavioral health services for clients residing in Jewett City who are unable to pay for services. An $800 grant to Community Prevention and Addiction Services, Inc. in Willimantic will allow that agency to provide a “Pattern Breaking” workshop for adults of a Danielson family shelter. The session is designed to address dysfunctional behavior patterns in families.

“As a community bank, we feel it is important to support initiatives designed to improve the lives of those around us,” said Merchant. “Our community is strengthened when others reach out to help.”

$1,000 for Moosup Litle League defibrillator from Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation

The Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation recently awarded a $1,000 grant to the Moosup Little League for the purchase of a battery-powered Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

According to Kevin C. Merchant, president and CEO of Jewett City Savings Bank, the grant was made in support of ongoing efforts throughout local communities to make the life-saving devices generally available to help ensure the safety of all residents.

The Moosup Little League defibrillator will be the third device made possible by Jewett City Savings Bank. Earlier this year, the Bank donated an AED to the Plainfield public school system for use at the Plainfield Early Childhood Center. A similar donation was made last year by the Bank to the Griswold Public Schools, where the importance of defibrillators was brought to light by the tragic death of Norwich Free Academy student Larry Pontbriant due to sudden cardiac arrest.

“Through our example, we are hoping that more area businesses and individuals will join in the campaign to make portable defibrillators available throughout our communities, to keep all our citizens safe,” said Merchant.

Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation donates $9,000 to area hospitals

The Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation recently awarded the third $5,000 installment of its five-year pledge to the BackusCare expansion project at Backus Hospital in Norwich.

The BackusCare project includes improvements to the emergency department and inpatient and outpatient surgical services, and enhancement to the hospital’s medical-surgical inpatient units and cancer care services.

The Foundation also awarded $1,000 to Backus Hospital’s annual campaign.

Additional grants of $1,000 each were awarded to annual appeal campaigns at three other area hospitals: Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, Natchaug Hospital in Mansfield, and Windham Hospital in Willimantic.

“Jewett City Savings Bank is committed to helping local hospitals meet the area’s healthcare needs,” said Kevin C. Merchant, president and CEO. “We are pleased to support their fundraising efforts through the Foundation.”

The hospitals were among 39 area non-profit organizations who received a combined total of $50,000 in grants from the Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation in 2008.

Jewett City Savings Bank celebrates new office in Preston with donations to local school, library and fire companies

It was Jewett City Savings Bank’s party, but the Poquetanuck Fire Department EMS, Preston City Fire Department, Preston Veterans Memorial School and Preston Public Library received all the presents!

The local awards from the Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation were among the highlights of the November 20th ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the grand opening of the Bank’s new Preston branch at 353 Route 165 in Fleming’s Center.

It is Jewett City Savings Bank’s 5th full-service office, and the first bank in this community. Other offices are located in Jewett City, Brooklyn, Dayville and Central Village.

“We are pleased to bring our trademark brand of community banking to the residents and businesses of Preston,” said Kevin C. Merchant, president and CEO.

Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation donates $8,000 to local food pantries

The Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation has awarded $8,000 to help stock food pantry shelves in Danielson and Jewett City.

With its $5,000 gift from the Foundation, the St. Mary Food Pantry in Jewett City will be able to supplement food distribution to meet the increase of families in need in Griswold, Jewett City, Lisbon and surrounding areas. A $3,000 grant from the Foundation will help the Friends of Assisi Food Pantry in Danielson stock its shelves and assist with the overhead costs of running the pantry.

The food pantry awards were announced recently at a morning reception held in Griswold, where representatives from 16 local non-profit civic and charitable organizations were present to receive a combined total of $24,500 in grants from the Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation.

The Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation was established in 2003 to reinforce, encourage, and support the Bank’s ongoing commitment to the well being of the communities it serves.

According to Foundation President Kevin C. Merchant, this year’s grant awards bring the total amount of funds distributed by the Foundation since its founding to over $200,000.
