Jewett City Savings Bank is offering local teens a unique opportunity to be part of a national Lights, Camera, Save! video competition focused on the value of saving.

“The contest will let kids combine their technology and communication skills to capture on video their thoughts about saving, and why it is so important,” says Kevin C. Merchant, president and CEO of Jewett City Savings Bank.

The Lights, Camera, Save! Video contest is part of the American Bankers Association’s Teach Children to Save campaign. It is a nationwide movement designed to guide young people towards lifelong savings habits and inspire their peers to become lifelong savers, as well.

“We hope that the young people of our community will live the ‘Start young, save more’ message,” said Merchant.

To participate, youths aged 13-16 can stop by Jewett City Savings Bank for an entry form and contest details. The Bank will host the first round of judging awarding local prizes, and will submit one winning video to compete at the national level for prizes including $3,000, $1,500 and $500 in U.S. Savings Bonds and an iPod® Touch.

The Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation is now accepting 2010 grant applications from local 501(c)(3), 170(c)(1) organizations, and other qualified non-profits whose work benefits the population of those communities where Jewett City Savings Bank has a major presence.

Guidelines and grant applications are available online here and at all offices of Jewett City Savings Bank. Completed applications must be received no later than August 31, 2010. Funding for approved projects will be made by December 31, 2010.

Financial support will be offered for existing program support, general support, special projects, and/or start-up endeavors covering a variety of issues impacting the community. The Foundation does not provide funding for individuals, sports, individual schools or religious groups.

The maximum grant amount is $5,000, determined by demonstrated needs and existing resources.

In 2009, Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation grant funding exceeded $48,000. A total of 37 area non-profit civic and charitable groups benefited, including local fire companies, libraries, and a number of programs advancing education, health and youth initiatives.

“As a true hometown bank, we are pleased to be able to make a difference in this way,” said Kevin C. Merchant, bank president and CEO.

The Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation, established in 2003 to reinforce, encourage, and support the Bank’s ongoing commitment to the well being of the communities it serves, has awarded nearly $250,000 since its founding.

Kevin C. Merchant, president and CEO of Jewett City Savings Bank, has announced the promotion of Katherine E. Quackenbush to the position of human resources officer. She replaces Shirley Pierce, who recently retired after 42 years of dedicated service to the Bank.

Quackenbush joined the Bank in 2007, and served as a teller and customer service representative prior to her most recent position as human resources assistant.

A Plainfield resident, she holds a bachelor’s degree from Grove City College in Pennsylvania.
